Community Conversations
with
Rep. Esther Agbaje

I started a podcast to include more people in important and needed conversations
that affect us all.
Hear from voices that
are familiar, involved,
and influential in current matters and issues.
One of the biggest highlights of this campaign season was getting the opportunity to talk with local leaders on our campaign's Community Conversations podcast. It was amazing to have conversations about such a wide range of  topics impacting our community, from housing to no-knock warrants to Black maternal health.

Since the campaign season has ended, we will not continue to release new podcast episodes regularly. However, we expect the Community Conversations podcast to return after the 2023 legislative session! At that time, keep an eye
out for further podcast announcements. In the meantime, listen to our previous conversations concerning the community here.

Episode 6 | Housing Justice: Evictions, Tenant Rights, and the Law

Get an inside look into the job of being a housing lawyer and advocate with today's episode. Lawyers Muria Kruger and Mary Kaczorek join us to discuss the issues that arise when it comes to property rental and what tenants can do when faced with difficult situations.

Episode 5 | Flynn Climate and Transportation Justice: Free Fares, Electric Vehicles, and Clean Air

Sam Rockwell, a longtime advocate for climate and social justice, is the Executive Director of Move Minnesota. Move Minnesota leads the movement for an equitable and sustainable transportation system that puts people first. They are passionate about connecting communities, ending the climate crisis, expanding access to jobs and resources, and improving daily life for Minnesotans of all ages, races, incomes, and abilities.

Episode 4 | Generational Impact: Supporting Representation in Our Schools, One Teacher at a Time w/Rep. Cedrick Frazier and Markus Flynn

With over 2/3 of Minneapolis students being students of color, representation in school staff, teachers, and leaders is as important as ever. In this episode, State House Representative Cedrick Frazier shares about the Increase Teachers of Color Act here in Minnesota. Also, Markus Flynn, the Executive Director of Black Men Teach, shares about the strategic efforts to drastically raise the rate of Black male elementary teachers from only .5%.

Episode 3 | Teaching Public Service in our Schools w/Alexis Love

We are in a time where Minneapolis is facing substantial officer shortages and struggles to hire the minimum amount of officers needed. Alexis offers a unique look into what it is like to work with teens who are interested in pursuing a career in public service.

Please note that Alexis is chatting with us in a personal capacity. Her views and experiences are that of her own and do not reflect or represent Minneapolis Public Schools.

Episode 2 | No Knock Warrants: The Facts and Dangers
w/ Rep. Athena Hollins and Sarah Murtada

In March of 2020, Breonna Taylor's death sparked outrage and protests around the world. This week, four Louisville officers were federally charged with violation of Breonna's civil rights with charges including conspiracy coverup, excessive force, and approval of a false warrant.

This week, we welcome Representative Athena Hollins who has worked extensively on legislative work on banning No-Knock Warrants here in Minnesota. Lawyer Sarah Murtada, formerly of Knock First Minnesota, also joins us to share the history, the facts, and statistics with us.

Episode 1 | Public Safety: Thinking Outside the Box

Today I'm featuring a dynamic community member with extensive experience and much to say about Public Safety. Latonya Reeves is the chairman of the Minnesota Civilian Public Safety Commission and a probation officer. You'll hear her thoughts on what it's going to take to keep our communities safe and strong and how she serves community members in her various roles.
